Why is my 70MB file with BMPs still 70MB with JPGs?!

I have a 48 page manual with screenshots. Initially they
were bitmaps, but I looked at the file size (69MB) and
remembered that i should have converted them into JPEGs.
So I went back to the original graphics files and saved
them as JPEGs. After I had been through the Word document
and replaced all the screenshots, I looked at the file
size. It was 73MB - bigger than with the bitmaps! How
could this be?

Then, as a test I removed all but just a few of the really
small screenshots, leaving mainly plain text. But the file
size stayed at 73MB! Am I going mad?

The answer is: I'm using the versioning feature in Word, so
the one file contains all the versions I have ever produced
of my document. It isn't surprising that the file size is
so big...

Try going into "File" and then "Properties" and make sure that the box by "Save Preview Picture" is unchecked. If this option was checked when you saved your file, you saved a preview picture of all of your pictures with the document. This inflates the file size. After you clear the check box for "Save Preview Picture" resave the document. and you should get better results.
