Why is the picture quality reduced when I save a presentation?

In powerpoint 2007 beta, when I save a presentation in pptx format, the
quality of all the pictures in the presentation is automatically reduced. Why
and how can I prevent this?

Compress Pictures is turned on by default in PPT 2007. This is by design.
(Bad design, as far as I'm concerned. I can tell this is going to become a
frequently asked question.)

To turn it off, select a picture, click "compress pictures" on the Picture
ribbon, click Options, and then uncheck "automatically perform basic
compression on save.

Either that, or set the target output to screen.

The default setting is supposed to be 220 pixels per inch, so it shouldn't
affect the presentation much. 220 is way more than you need for on-screen --
most (all?) projectors can't display at that high a resolution anyway.

But I'm with you, I don't particularly like it being the default.
