Why not use Get External Data?

Cross-posting from .conversion in case there are members here not reading
that group:

I've been told not to use Get External Data. This is for a database that is
1.99GB and compacting down to 127MB (routinely ending up back at 1.99GB).

How does Get External Data differ from importing the same rows using an
append query?

Without knowing the context for the recommendation that you received, one
thought is that you have more control over the format of the data when you
use an append query. But, if you can provide more background info, we might
be able to provide more detailed info.
