Windows XP and Excel causes network file access issues

Just for anyone else who has had the following problems:
I figured out how to rectify it and wanted to share it.

1. A user with a Windows XP machine running either
Excel 2000 or Excel XP accesses a networked Excel file.
The user saves it and it says something like "the file
was saved as 093746. you should resave it as its
original name" - my wording is well off the mark but what
happens is your original file is lost and you have a new
file with an 8 digit number and no .xls extension to it.

2. A networked Excel file was opened in the same
situation as above and changes made and saved. Another
user tries to open it and Excel says the file is open and
you can only save it in Read only. Checking the open
files on the domain controller reveals that the file is
indeed still open when it is obviously not. It is like
Windows XP has not released that file on the network even
though the user has saved and closed it.....

Note: The users have read and modify permissions on
these files so permissions are not an issue.

Do this:

In Excel 2000 or XP:

Tools-->Options-->General Tab-->TICK: "Ignore other
applications" and to be safe, UNTICK: "recently used
file list".

I have no idea WHY!!!! Windows XP does this but I have
found it occuring on a Windows 2000 Active Directory
domain accessing files across the network and it is very
frustrating.

Hope this helps somebody out there.
