Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Security Information for Developers

T

Tom Pepper Willett

SP2 is going to be a nightmare for a while, especially those who install it
immediately upon its release.

But, at least some of us can let the others do the final "beta testing" for
the rest of us. ;-)

WinXP Pro is fine with SP1 and all the hotfixes, IMHO. We use it on all of
our office machines.

But, we will indeed wait a loooong time before installing SP2.

Read the bulletin, which I referenced in my original post (quoted at the
bottom below).

I'm not so concerned about installing the Service Pack, although that will
indeed be problematic for developers. However, there are a number of changes
to IE that will impact web developers tremendously, such as blocking all
JavaScript calls to window.open(), and a number of others which will
directly impact the user experience of those using web sites.

You may want to re read the changes
- only window.open Not called by the user are blocked

I haven't seen any problems using it
IE lets you know a popup is blocked and give you the option to see it if you want (plus set how aggressive it is)

That is only ONE of the changes. There are quite a few. Obviously, Microsoft
posted this article because it would impact web developers. In particular, I
direct your attention to:

entitled "How to Make Your Web Site Work with Windows XP Service Pack 2"
