Won't get E-mail until network is "tickled"

Strange.

Using OS X.3.4, fast user switching (two users), all updates applied,
Entourage 2004.

We will get error messages all day, UNTIL we "tickle" the network. For
example. I'll get server error messages all day upon first launch of
Entourage 2004, but if I go to my browser and go to a new site, Entourage
"fixes" itself and will then get mail all day. No more prodding needed. It just
happens on first launch, and it happens for both users.

It's quite annoying.

I haven't tried a re-install (going to do so tonight), but thought I would ask
first to find out if it's some esoteric pref or something.

Further examples include opening another mail app, opening a browser,
going to a new web page if the browser was open when Entourage was
launched, etc... ANYthing that touches the connection will "kickstart"
Entourage.

Strange indeed.

What ISP are you using and how are you connecting? This is not so uncommon
as you might think. I have had the same situation in the past. maybe PPOE
would fix it if you are using DSL.

I am using SBC DSL. What is strange, is that all other internet apps
behave just fine, and Entourage X also behaved fine (still does).
There is definitely something different with Entourage 2004.
