Word 2000 freezes. Task manager shows "not responding" twice.

This happened right after the computer was upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP
Pro. Word was working fine before upgrade. Now, click on a document, Word
opens slow. Freezes. Task manager shows Word open twice. End task takes
long time to finally close Word. All updates and patches applied for both
Office 2000 SBE (on SP 3) and Windows XP Pro. I ran repair from Office 2000
SR 1 disk. No effect. This is a royal pain! MS own upgrade has killed it's
own office software! Please tell me how to correct this problem.

How are you opening the documents? Are you starting Word first and
using File/Open? Or are you double-clicking the documents in an
Exploring window such as your Desktop or My Computer?
