Word 2002 no longer displays imported graphics files

I'm using XP Home v2002 SP2 and Word 2003, and am experiencing the following
maddening problem. Until recently (possibly until installing SP2) the Insert
Picture From File functionality has worked flawlessly. However, today I find
that when I import a graphic, the text in the document shifts down by the
expected amount to accomodate the picture, but the picture itself is never
displayed. I can provoke it into displaying - briefly - by meddling with the
properties, or opening the help window, but if I scroll down, pushing it
avove the top of the window, and then back down again, it vanishes! I haven't
touched my graphics hardware, and the problem also occurs with files created
prior to the XP SP2 upgrade which I know have successfully displayed the
graphics they contain in the past. Any help anybody can offer would be much
appreciated!

Apologied - to clarify, I should point out that I'm using Word 2002 SP3, not
Word 2002. Oh, for an edit button...

Make sure you have "Drawings" checked on the View tab of Tools | Options and
*don't* have "Picture placeholders" checked. And of course you have to be in
Print Layout view to see wrapped graphics.

Suzanne, there are several threads here relating to this
problem, with various solutions suggested, none of which
have cleared the problem for me, including yours.

I have: 1) Verified the Drawings placeholder box is
unchecked, 2) Saved JPEGs with progressive interlace, 3)
Updated video driver, 4) Used the Paste as special with
icon box unchecked. None of these actions has corrected
the problem.

There is an obvious flaw in Word regarding the dispay of
graphics, or it would not be happening so often to
different individuals.

Hi Ray,

It looks like you came in the middle of the thread so
not sure what the exact scenario you're using.

Is your copy of Word 2002 current (http://officeupdate.com ))

Is this in a new document, only certain documents or ???

Does the graphic appear if you use File=>Web Page Preview.

I'm assuming that your item #2 was an attempted workaround?
Word's graphic filters don't support progressive JPEGs.

Anything new about this topic? As I have the same problem with
graphics. But not only exactly the same problem in Word XP (2002 with
Office SP3), also in some other external applications (MS Autoroute,
some other programs ...)

I did an uninstall of SP2, then the problem was gone!

Hi Walter,

Check for an updated graphic card driver from the
card makers website and also try turning down the
graphics acceleration 2 clicks to see if that helps.

I'm assuming when you say 'uninstalled SP2' you're
referring to Windows XP SP2? You may also want to
check with the folks in the Windows newsgroups if so.
I've not had the issue on our computers with WinXP SP2,
so it may be brand/model graphics card focused.

I had the following problem:

Word would allow me to import any of its recognised graphics formats without
complaint. A space would open up corresponding to and bahaving in the same
way as a picture (But displayed as white space). When I hit enter after the
picture was inserted the picture appeared.

It then disappeared when I scrolled it off the screen and back on again. I
could make it reappear by moving the cursor to the bottom right of the
picture and hitting enter or enter and backspace/delete.

Dragging the picture properties window over the graphic also made it
reappear, as did dragging other active windows over it. As soon as Word was
given focus again the pictures disappeared.

Not all picture types caused this problem interestingly enough. Just bitmap
type pictures (.jpg, .tif, .gif etc.). Word had no problem displaying
imported Excel graphics or vector based pictures such as .wmf files.

I had a read of various forums describing this complaint, installed Office
SP3 and more advanced graphics drivers (As suggested elsewhere. Another
suggested solution was to reduce hardware acceleration on the graphics card -
this had no discernable effect), bringing the system up to date. None of
these changes made any difference to my PC.

I fixed the problem by uninstalling Word (As comes with MS Works). My
computer was shipped with Works, but I installed Office XP on it as soon as I
got it, not realising that another version of word was lurking on the
computer at the same time. Removing MS Works Word didn't affect my normal.dot
settings or anything, so there were no other incidental problems.

A friend of mine had the same problems with Word XP, but his problems
appeared to be fixed by installing Office SP3. I'm unaware of whether Works
was on this computer or not.

Just to give more information - All the graphics printed perfectly and teh
problem graphics would not display in print preview either.
