Word 2002 Styles and Numbering

When using styles containing Outline numbering (e.g. Heading 1) and then
typing Normal text and then you want to do a numbered list, if you click the
Numbering button a heading style is applied instead of numbered list. Other
than choosing Format, Bullets and Numbering and selecting the Numbered tab,
do you know of a work around so that a style is not applied?
