Word 2003 bracking links to pictures

Dear All,

I'm having a recurring problem with MS Word on my XP machine. After
inserting pictures by linking them to the original GIFs (rather than
embedding them - which results in large documents), Word cannot now find the
pictures: I've tried working on both a network copy of the document and a
local one (to reduce the length of the file path) - the result is the same.
It is also happening in other documents.It started losing the odd picture,
and now it's lost most of them - over 100!,The problem didn't happen when I
was using Word on Windows 2000.

Any ideas?
