word 2003 lost document

Manuel Ortega

Hi:

One of the users on my network was working on a word document that is
located on a network share. Out of the blue he loses connection to the
server and the share. The document hangs and he is not able to work on it
again. He manages to close the window of the hung document. When he opens
the document again none of the changes he made to the document were saved or
recovered. He claims to have seen the autosave feature working and saving
the document every now and then. Any idea where the changes have gone? Are
they stored in a temp file or similar? What must I do? Please help.

Best regards,

Manuel Ortega

You, my friend, have learnt the first golden rule of working with files on
networks: - always work locally, save locally, and then copy back across. If
anything happens whilst saving to the remote drive, then you're in trouble;
far safer to save locally.

Hi Manuel,

Word requires an add-in to have an actual autosave feature,
where the file will be a .DOC named one.

The setting in Tools=>Options=>Save is an autorecovery
one that creates files with an extension of .ASD

Word 2002 and 2003 also have Office document recovery
but generally it would more likely kick in for a Word
crash than for a lost network connection.

You may be able to locate older temp files that Word left
behind, rename and try to open the correct one
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;211632&FR=1
but once the file was reopened the old temp files may have
been deleted by Windows.

You may want to activate the setting in Tools=>Options=>Save
for future for 'Make a local copy...' for files located on
a network. While it takes a little extra time for these
to be copied then moved, working locally can be quicker and
keeps the temp files on the local drive until save of the
docuemnt.

You may also want to consider the use of the 'always make backup'
setting in Tools=>Options=>Save, but generally getting folks in
the habit of using Ctrl+S (save) every few minutes while typing
can be useful :)
