WORD 2004 : FONTS : 10.3.7

Adding fonts to the /Library/Fonts Directory Increases the load time
for word greatly. It can take up to 1min to load word on a PowerMacG5
when there are just under 500 fonts enabled. Word is the only program I
have come accross which seems to be affected by this issue. It would
make more sence to only load fonts as required, rather than
significantly affecting the start-up time of the application.

This is so slow it is quicker to go to font book disable the fonts load
word., and then enable the desired fonts.

Microsoft could you address this, or could someone provide a pointer as
to how this issue can be resolved

thank you!

How about "don't do that"? Who on earth can use 500 fonts at once? What
sort of document could possibly need this?

Also, have you tried my usual goat-sacrifice solution - clear the font
caches, delete Office's font cache, and restart the computer? Don't know
if it will help with 500 fonts but it can't hurt to try. m.

Well yes, but how does WOrd know what fonts you'll need ??? It would be
up to you to only unable the fonts you need (using the FontBook or any
other Font utility you'd want).
500 active fonts is a HUGE number of fonts. That puts a very heavy
burden on most apps on your Mac (including the System itself).

Hello "shustakh",

Everytime Word Launches it does quickly scan through your fonts. So yes,
someone in your situtation with 500 fonts would notice a difference.

But what also slows down Launch Time, is if you add fonts, and then Launch
Word. This is because when Word noticies new Fonts, it has to recompile the
"Office Font Cache" to be able to display WYSIWYG fonts in the Font Menu and
Formatting Palette quickly.

But after Word has done this, it will not need to recompile the "Office Font
Cache" unless another font is added.

So generally I would guess that Launching Word with all your fonts enabled
would be quicker than contanstaly enableding them and disabling them and
launching Word inbetween. And as said before, Launching Word will fewer
fonts in general would also help to.

Thanks for Posting,
