Word 2007 has no style

I'm trying to come to terms with the radically different GUI in Word 2007,
and my most frequent source of annoyance is that there seems to be no quick
way to see what style is in effect when I click on a word or paragraph.

In Word 2003, I had the 'Style' combo box displayed to the left of the
'Font' combo box, which allowed me to see at a glance what the formatting
was. I would be happy if I could reveal the style by right-clicking or
something, but I can't find any useful tips in 'Help' (how odd).

Has anyone found a better way to see the style name than by opening the
'Style' pop-up menu?

Yes, there is.

Right-click the Quick Access Toolbar and choose Customize. Set the
category to "Commands Not in the Ribbon". Select the item named Style,
which shows a box on the right containing an insertion point and a
down arrow. Click the Add button and then OK.

This puts the old Style combo box on the Quick Access Toolbar, and it
always shows one of the styles at the insertion point. The only
problem is that there can be several styles -- a paragraph style, a
character style, maybe a table style or a numbered list style -- and
the box can show only one of them.

If you need a deeper view, press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S or click the dialog
launcher in the Styles group of the ribbon to open the Styles pane;
then click the second button at the bottom to open the Style
Inspector.

Thanks, Jay. That's perfect.
