Word attachments from PC lock up computer

Since upgrading Office, I've had two major problems. If I just select
an MS Word attachment in Entourage, Entourage locks up and something
inside the computer starts grinding. Although I can select other
programs, I can't do anything in them. I have to force quit Entourage
and restart the computer, sometimes twice. Attachments from Macs or
..jpg attachments work fine. I'm using Tiger 10.4.2 and everything is
upgraded.

Second problem has been discussed here - I can't print any calendar
from Entourage. Entourage just quits when I select print.

RE: Problems printing...

I had no troubles, but then, I realized I was printing my local calendars...
When I try to print a calendar on the Exchange server, it quits like
everyone else.

So, I think that's key - it only happens (to me) printing from an Exchange
calendar.

Why can't you? Are you saying that you get the spinning cursor of death
in *all* programs at once?

One thing you could try is start up Activity Monitor and sort it to show
highest CPU usage first. Then select an attachment in Entourage and when
this problem occurs, switch to Activity Monitor. Even if you can't "do
anything", you can presumably look at the window, and it might show you
what process is doing all this work. Sorry I can't think of a better
suggestion. m.

Matt, thanks. I don't actually get the spinning cursor. What happens is
that the active program grays out and starts jumping around. Activity
monitor indicates that the problem seems to be the Finder. If I force
quit and relaunch the Finder I can do some things and when I then force
quit Entourage and Word, I don't need to restart. In fact this time, it
only froze when I tried to open the attachment. I was able to save it.
I did have to force quit Word and reopen it to see the document.

I know I'm not being helpful, but I've never seen the problem you're
describing and the words "the active program grays out and starts
jumping around" do not convey anything to my mind... I just don't have
any idea what you're talking about. It genuinely beats me why the Finder
would start acting up merely because you click on something in an
Entourage window - it makes no sense to me. Sorry - m.

"jumping around" is actually blinking. I did find that when I went back
to using Pathfinder, I no longer have a problem opening PC Docs. So
it's definitely a finder problem. Unfortunately, that doesn't fix
calendar printing problems - Entourage closes whenever I try to print.

Matt, sorry. The symptoms keeping changing. Originally it did happen
when I selected the document. I keep rerunning the Office upgrade and
then the situation changes - improves some in fact. So i was then able
to select attachments but not to open them. The last time I ran the
upgrade meant I was able to print one monthly calendar but no weekly
one. Unfortunately, I'm about to be away for two weeks so won't have
time to try other tests. Perhaps reinstalling Office and rerunning the
upgrades would solve the problems.

Actually I'm worried that what needs reinstalling is the system. Best of
luck with this - m.

Can you print from month view? Is the crashing only when printing from week
view?

Take any events that span the week boundaries and break them into separate
events, so that no event spans the week boundary. Does that print OK?

Please report back here.

I just tried a week with no cross-boundary events and the program still
crashed. Month printing is now working.
