Word files very large

I have several word files (wordXP) that are getting very fat - 5Mb, but
have under 100 pages.

How can I compact these down, but retain them as .doc files (ie not using
ZIP). I've tried accepting all changes and copying to a new file, but to no
avail.

The doc does contain under a dozen images, copied in from Visio, but these
are 100k each. As such, I'd expect the doc to be only about 2Mb, not 5Mb.

Thanks

How did you copy the images? if you inserted as file then they will be the
same size. But if you copy and paste in the document they become BMP by
default. This increases the file size. Try doing paste special and selecting
GIF format. Paste special option is in edit.

The word "images" are actually OLE objects rather than bmps, which can be
edited in situ with VISO.
