Word META DATA (properties) programmatically adding

Hi there,
Is there a way to add custom properties to a document programmatically (meta
data I mean). The purpose of adding a custom properties is to have these
documents indexed in the Sharepoint portal Server and I need to have good
search done on these documents. If anyone could give me a good approach to
accomplish this it will be really helpful.

Custom properties can be defined using VBA; values for built-in properties
(including those on the Custom tab of File | Properties) can also be set
using VBA.
