Work Files Never Die

Running Word 98 under OS 9.2.2 on a Power Mac beige G3 with 352 MB Built-in
memory. Why do those ubiquitous Work files refuse to be deleted even after
the basic document has been closed ? And, indeed, why do some live on even
when the application is closed and the computer shut down ?

Every once in awhile, I run Sherlock search just for Work files, so I can
delete them. And, sure enough, there are always a few gleefully inhabiting
directories in which some long-since trashed document was produced. What's
the story ? Have they fixed this PITA in latter versions ?

Yes. But Word 2004 is the first version where they have fixed the most
important side-effect of this behavior, which is that if you save often
enough you get a Disk Is Full message and you lose all your work. That
no longer happens (and the work files are no longer visible, and they
are no longer left lying around). m.
