both should have worked although it is best to write the SUM one as
=SUM(G3,I3), and you don't really need the brackets in the second one - the
fact neither of them did makes me think that the numbers in either column G
or column I aren't actually numbers.
In a cell somewhere type =ISNUMBER(G3), if TRUE is returned then its a
number, repeat for I3. If one of them comes back "FALSE", the click on an
unused cell, choose copy, select the column that returned the FALSE and
choose edit / paste special / add and try the formulas again.
