Wrapping Text with Pix and Tables

J

Jim

I am having a problem placing text to the left or right
of a table or picture.
I usually convert the pic to gif and place it inside a
table.
Then I place the table to the right.
However, when I do, a huge blank space appears to the
left In which I can type nothing.
To further add to my frustration, I somehow solved this
problem on my home page. However, if I change themes to a
customized theme, the text reverts to below the picture.
I'm sure this is simple to someone, but it frustrates the
heck out of me...lol

Why are you placing the pic in a table? You shouldn't unless you have a
specific reason to do so. As for wrapping, right-click the pic and select
Picture Properties. Then you'll be able to select the text wraping style.

Weeeel, someone once told me to do that, though I will
say that it seemed to keep the text away from the picture
when it worked.
Your suggestion works, by default.
However, 2 things occur.
1. The text is now right up on the picture. I'd like to
separate the 2 by a couple spaces at least. This is
where, I think, using the table solved the problem.
2. As I said, it worked by default, however under picture
properties, I see no reference to text wrapping. That is
to say when I right click on the picture and select
picture properties.
Thanks for your help.

I am using FP 2002. If you have another version things may be different. But
in the Picture Properties dialog, on the Appearance tab, there is a section
called Wrapping Style - that's what I am talking about. On the same tab are
boxes for horizontal and vertical spacing - these control the blank space
between the picture and the text.

You can't place anything to the left or right *outside* of a one cell table.
Create a 1 row 2 column table and place the image in the right cell and the text in the
left cell.

You are correct. I misread. Thought it was just for
placement. BTW, FP 2003.
However, the text is still right up on the picture. How
do I remove it ever so slightly.
Thanx again.
Also, if you would be so kind, should I be using tables
to insert thumbnails. That is what got me on the whole
table kick. Perhaps that is why I have the same problem
with text wrapping.

This is a no go also.
Problems:
1. Visible table lines.
2. Text still encroaches right up on the picture. I need
separation.
Mr. Aitken's solution is better, but it still has text
encroaching on the picture.
Thanx for all the help.

The horiz and vert spacing values are the # of pixels between the image and
the text. As for thumbnails, they are just a small image and don't need any
special treatment. Tables are useful for many things but I think it's best
to use them only when really needed.

Set the table borders to zero.
Use the left, center, or right align buttons to align the text.

I hope you take this in the spirit in which it is offered, but you seem a
real newbie to FP. That's OK - we all were at some time - but it's a mistake
to just sit down with a complex program and expect to get anywhere with it.
I highly recommend getting a book on FP or using the online help - spend a
day or 2 going through the information and tutorials. It will save you a LOT
of time in the long run.

Good luck,

Jim, lemme side with Steve Easton on the "table/no table" question. I think
you'll find you have far greater control over the placement of your pictures
and text if you place them in tables. So far as your reservations are
concerned:

1-Set the border size of your tables to 0. Table lines will disappear.
2-Adjust the Cell padding and Cell spacing values (Table > Properties >
Table in FP2000) to nudge the text away from the picture.

Hope this helps.

J

Jim

You are absolutely correct.
However, I had my FP 2002 moving along with no problems.
Although it is not intuitive, it seemed to be a lot
easier than 2003.
I appreciate everyone's support. Between this and new
post about Navigation Bars, (an item I had NO problem
with in 2002) I will have my very simple site) up and
running.
If you're at all interested, it is www.keynoteld.com,
(please don't take that as a plug) and it is under
construction needing some new pages which I will add when
I get things together.
Thanx again,
Jim
