Wrong addresses in Address Book when using Exchange and local doma

Hello! I would appreciate if anyone can help with the following problem:

I'm using Exchange Server 2003 and Active Directory (AD) bound to a local
domain like domain.local. All AD users have real emails like (e-mail address removed)
as default addresses in Exchange E-mail addresses list (instead of
(e-mail address removed)).

When connecting from Outlook to Exchange (using AD authentication) all those
emails are changed to "EX" (Exchange) type and no longer usable because the
AD domain is local.

For example: I have a contact like John Smith with real email like
(e-mail address removed). This contact has an AD account with two emails:
(e-mail address removed) (default) and (e-mail address removed). In my Outlook Address Book,
his email gets changed to "EX" (Exchange) type (instead of SMTP type).

smith.local is a local domain configured in AD. smith.com is a real domain
with absolutely different mail server. In this situation I cannot send email
to John.

If I change the default addresses to @domain.local, then lot of
correspondence is undeliverable.

What's wrong in my configuration? (local domain and external email addresses
by default). What should I change to make it work? Any advise is appreciated.
Thanks!
