X axis Chart revisions

I am revising some chart slides for a client and when I click on the chart to
make some changes the X axis scale defalts to all the same number and no
matter what I do I can't get the the original numbers scale back (ie 0 10 20
30 40 converts to -392) Why is this happening and how do I deal with it.
