XP Pro listing directory on 2003 Server with 12,500 entries takes 2 minutes?

Have small office network with 2003 Server with share
drive having directory with 12,500 entries accessing from
either NT-4 workstation or XP Pro workstation taking 1 1/2
to 2 minutes. Have Windows 98 workstation with access time
of 5-8 seconds.

No errors reported in logs.
