You've got to be kidding?

I went to my local Apple store over the weekend to purchase an upgrade to my existing Home and Student Edition of Office.

It wasn't until after I'd installed the new software, and started Entourage for the first time that I found out Exchange connectivity isn't supported in this new version (Hmm, provide a feature and than take it away - that doesn't make much sense to me).

Now what do I do - Apple won't take the opened software back?

Not much help JR.

The issue isn't whether I read about the software or not, the fact of the matter is Microsoft provided a feature in previous versions then took it away.

Actually, what strikes me as the issue is that a large number of
teachers and students are likely to be working or attending
institutions that use Exchange Server. Being in that position myself,
it's a make-or-break issue, so I'm forced to the more expensive
version as i need as much access as Microsoft can give me. This is
particularly true because I'm one of a handful of Mac users in a
Windows environment.

I should add that while I appreciate Microsoft's business reasons for
wanting to distinguish its products for different markets and to give
a break to students and teachers, it seems to me that a less
misleading title for this particular edition would be "Home" or "Stand
Alone." Rather than crippling Entourage in this way, leaving it out
altogether might be better.

First, no Student & Teacher version is upgradable. Only the standard version
of Office for Mac is upgradable. The low price of S&T takes in the fact that
it's not upgradable.

Sell you copy and learn from the experience.

An observation:

You purchased Office 2008 *Home and Student Edition*. It is no longer
*Student and Teacher Edition*.

While Office 2008 H&S is in the same price class as Office 2004 S&T,
they are not the same product.

Student and Teacher Edition was sold only to those in the education
market whereas Home and Student Edition is available to everyone for
non-commercial purposes.

Exchange is a product marketed primarily toward commercial entities but
also to the educational market. Those educational institutions using
Exchange are big enough to also negotiate volume licenses for their
students for Office at a much greater savings than those who buy Home
and Student Edition.

Still... if the product is not what you expected then you should be able
to return it. Microsoft will honor returns through the retailer where
you purchased the product or by contacting Microsoft directly

Hope this helps!

It is returnable to Microsoft up to 45 days after purchase. You'll
find the instructions for return on the Microsoft website. You have to
send it back by a traceable courier and a cheque will be issued in 2-4
weeks.
