Active X Control Issues

Project server 2007

We are having a problem with any user who is outside the office downloading
Active X controls in Project Center. Anyone directly on the network can
download the controls by changing Internet Options settings as posted in many
of the discussions.

I have replicated the problem on my home PC where all the Internet options
have been changed - ie adding to Trusted Sites, changing Security to Low,
disabling Firewall, etc.

The behavior we are seeing is that we login to our public site to connect to
our , Corporate Extranet to get to a link for the Project Server application,
then go to Project Center and then initate the download. The prompt for the
first download comes up and after an hour of the screen displaying a wheel
and saying Downloading controls - the message comes back the the controls
could not be downloaded, contact system admin, etc.

Aside from trying to manually apply the controls - is there something we
should be looking at on the server or network in how the controls are
accessed and the downloads attempted- ie port, our own firewall settings,
etc.

Hi RQ,

I am by all means no system administrator, but something tells me that it
has something to do with your firewall. You may want to investigate more into
this direction. Hope that gives you some investgation direction

Even am not a system administrator, but would like to ask one
question. The public site that you connect to get into corp network is
of your corp domain or a third party vendor's. In this case, you may
need to see if that domain is a trusted domain. I recall a way that I
used is to add this domain (the public site's domain with ip address)
to the HOSTS file on your local computer. This way the domain comes in
as trusted and that would not block any downloads (IE understands this
better then :) ). A note of caution, please be safe when you try to
modify HOSTS file, better a backup before anything.

Thanks,
Ravi.

Hi RQ,

Am not a pro on system administration but few questions to help you
out.

1. The public site that you connect to get into your corp network, is
that in your corp domain or a third party site?
2. When you work away from your network, can you make sure that your
ISP resolves the domain? Mostly not, I think.

So you can try to add the IP address and of the domain (of both your
corporate & the public site that you login) to your local computer's
HOST file.
This is a risky thing (most of them say), so be cautious when using
this method. You are not doing any drastic change other than just
simplifying the domain resolution for one or few domains here. Add the
public site domain as well as your corp domain to this host file and
restart your browser to check. I would recommend taking a backup of
HOSTS file before anything. More on this host file is at

(I think second time am replying to this topic, for some reason I
don't see my early reply appearing)

Thanks,
Ravi.
