Adding word to the dictionary

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Every time that I try to add a word to the dictionary (because it has been highlighted as being incorrectly spelled), the "Add" option is greyed out and so I can't achieve it. I have looked for anything that seems out of the ordinary in the settings, but have not been able to come up with the answer.

Thanks Bob. I just checked and there was a custom dictionary already set up and it's check-box elected. I merely unselected it and reselected it and saved and it seems to have worked. I tried it with the words "defence" and "defense", and it allowed me to add the latter, and accepted the former as being correct (the Aussie spelling).
