Assigning multiple of the same material resource to task

Is there a way to assign more than one of the same Material Resource t
a given task? I ask because if I attempt to assign another version o
the same resource to a task like the situation below...

_TASK_#1

Resource NameUnits (
Unit=1$)Cost
Material Resourc
A100,000.00$100,000.00
Material Resourc
A4,000.00$4,000.00

...then Project will REMOVE the first version of the resource and onl
keep the latter version of the resource. It will not add the tw
together before removing the first version; it will simply wipe th
first version out.

Can I then A) somehow assign two copies of a material resource wit
their independent totals, or B) Assign two copies of a material resourc
and somehow have Project combine (not replace) the two into one entry

Hi KingKikapu,

Each resource (material or work or cost) have an ID. You cannot
have the same ID assigned twice. If you need to assign more
material resources, you'll either need to create a separate material
resource and assign the separate resource as a new assignment or
alter the existing assignment and modify the amount (units).

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi

As Julie has suggested, you would need to create different resources with
individual IDs. But you may group the resources through Project > Group to
view the total of a group of resources.

I hope it helps.

In the real world, how could there be multiple occurances of the SAME
resource assigned to a given task? If I estimate that I'll use 10 yards of
concrete on a given task and then later calculate I'll need to add another
15 yards, I haven't estimated 10 of "concrete A" and 15 of "concrete B."
Rather I have simply revised my estimate of total concrete used upwards from
10 yards to 25 yards. Seems like it would be just as easy to edit the
existing estimate to show the revised total amount as it would be to enter a
whole new additional entry as it sounds like you're trying to do. In your
example, why not just add the amounts yourself using any convenient
calculator, enter the total of 104,000 units for that resource, and be done
with it?

Hey,

I'm have a small problem, let's say i have a website to build and i need 4
web developers. How do I enter that in the resource sheet??

is it like: Prog1, Prog 2,....Prog 4 at 100% each (8 hrs per day)? or can I
say Programmer at 400%??

Or does that mean 1 programmer working for 32hrs??

First be clear where the percentages are being used. You have options when
you create the resource ... either list them invidually as Prog 1, Prog 2,
etc and set each to a max of 100% or create just one aggregate resource name
"Programmers" with a max availability of 400%. If you do the former and
want two resources to work, you assign each resource Prog 1 @ 100% and Prog
2 @ 100%. If you do the latter, you assign Programmers @ 200 %. Thing is,
you can't "mix and match" - you have to pick one way of doing programmers
and stick to it for all tasks in the project. If you list Joe Programmer
and Jill Programmer as separate individuals (100% each) and ALSO have a
group resource of four Programmers (400%), Project has no way of knowing
that Joe and Jill are actually two members of the group of four.

But the original post wasn't about work resources such as programmers, it
was about materials, a different critter altogether.
