Baseline Start Dates are wrong when using the Grouping function

I am using Project 2007 with SP2. When I use the Project, Group By option
and use any custom field, the dates that are displayed in the Gantt table in
the Baseline Start field at the summary level are incorrect. It seems to be
displaying the baseline start of the task it is using to determine the
baseline finish for the summary. How can I get Project to display the
correct summary baseline start date?

Hello crpmst,

I'm sorry, I can't attempt to test your scenario with the limited
information you've provided. Can you please be more specific? What
values do you have in the custom fields? Specifically what is your
Group definition?

Give us some more info and we'll try to assist.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

In Project 2007, I have created a new .mpp file. I add several tasks and
assign logic and durations to them. I create a baseline from the current
start and finish dates for each task using the Tools, Tracking, Set Baseline
command. I add baseline start and finish as columns in my view. Then create
a custom text fields for responsibility. I then assign values to each task
for both custom field. For instance, I assign Bill to 5 tasks, Mary to 5
tasks, and so on for responisbility. Then go to Project, Group By, More
Groups and create a new grouping with the group by criteria as the
responsibility custom text field. Look at the dates in the grouping band for
baseline start. They are incorrect. It should show the earliest baseline
start for any task in the group. It is showing the baseline start for the
task in which the baseline finish is used in the group by band.

Thanks, I can now step through your scenario and reproduce what you
report. The group by band seems to show the latest baseline start
as well as the latest baseline finish. The start and finish fields
do summarize the tasks correctly.

The same issue occurs when grouping by Resource Name.

I was able to achieve what should be happening through two custom
fields and formulas.

I added Start1 and Finish1 to the table. I then customized the
fields as below:

Start1 use the formula [Baseline Start]
Set the calculation for task and group summary rows to Rollup -
Minimum

Finish1 use the formula [Baseline Finish]
Set the calculation for task and group summary rows to Rollup -
Maximum

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

This is a work around, but how do I report this as a bug? This is not the
way Project should work and it is not the way I want to do all our schedules.
We have over 200 Project files with this problem.

Hi crpmst,

I've sent the information from your post through some internal
channels the MVPs have access to.

The only site I'm familiar with for bug reports available to the
public is the connect site: http://connect.microsoft.com

but they don't appear to have a way of posting bugs for Project.

To make the process of updating your project files easier, copy the
Start1 and Finish1 custom fields back to the Global.MPT file through
Tools > Organizer. Then as you work on each of the 200 project
files, you should be able to just add the two fields and the
formulas and customizations should come through without further
work.
