Cannot open Project 2007 file, Project 2007 often tries 2 reinstal

Office 2003, Vista Home Premium. One Project 2007 file does open, another
does not. The one does not open tells me: Project cannot recognize this
file format. Would you like to open this file as text only? If I say "yes",
I go into the Import Wizard. I go through that process, interestingly all of
the import fields say "OUT OF CONTEXT", and I finally "Finish" and nothing is
imported. So it seems that the file is corrupt. But how do I prevent this
from happening again? The other strange thing is that Project 2007 often
tries to reinstall when I'm in Outlook (2003). I don't have any of the
Service Packs for Project installed. Might they help?

Hi SHoffman,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Definitely get the SPs before you go any further. The 2 SPs do cure a multitude of problems, though whether yours is amongst them we won't know until you've installed them. One of the corrupters of files is when exiting. It is usually safer to use File/Exit rather than clicking the X in the top right corner, though I confess to using the X more often than not and haven't suffered corruption. Also, it is considered wise to use Save As... and overwrite the original, rather than just clicking the Save button. If you suspect a corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
