Entourage

JRB

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I am trying to help a client out but do not have a remedy. Please help and provide guidance.

Client can receive but can not send any e-mail. Error message received is the following: " Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods." Error: 17897

I re-entered their info but this did not do the trick. I do not want to delete the account (this will wipe out all of her previously received e-mails?) and create a new user from scratch.

I would appreciate some guidance here. Thank you.

From the Entourage menu bar, choose Tools > Accounts. Then edit an account.
At the top of the Edit Account window, click the Account Settings tab.
Click the "Click here for advanced sending options" button. Set these
options correctly for your particular mail server. Your ISP should be
able to tell you the proper port, whether you need to use SSL, and the
proper username and password.

-- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than to me, as E-mail
sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter. Due
to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting messages through
their servers, I often ignore posts from Google Groups. Use a real news
client if you want me to see your posts.

Client uses Verizon DSL and is tapping into a corp server.

Then you're putting in the wrong values.

Please answer these questions:

1. Who is your ISP? 2. What have you supplied for each of these settings?:

Tools > Accounts > Edit Account > SMTP Server Advanced sending options:
Override default SMTP port SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
SMTP server requires authentication

Yeah but what about those that work or live in areas and use ISP's that block
NNTP access?

The school I go to does this. So my only access is via the web.

Many ISPs use different servers for sending and receiving mail. For example,
Verizon Online uses the clever names
incoming.verizon.net for incoming mail and
outgoing.verizion.net for outgoing mail.

You can find the correct settings for your configuration by going to the
Verizon DSL web site, searching for "set up e-mail" and choosing a page that
is the most relevant to your Verizon configuration. This will tell you which
servers to use and how to configure them.

That's not the OP's question. I understand your frustration with your IT
department but please don't interject your problem into someone else's
thread about his problem. That just causes confusion.

William:

I could use an MVP's advice on this one. I do not know how to properly advice my client and previous suggestions were very basic with no help at all.

For the last time: Contact your ISP and get the correct settings from
them. What is so hard about that?? My goodness!

I came here looking for expert advice and all I received was 3rd grade responses. This is very unfortunate.

I apologize most sincerely.

The client settings are as follows:

using using Port 110
server does not support SSL -so that is not checked.
SMTP requires authentication is checked
Use same settings as receiving mail server is also checked
Receiving always use secure password is checked

I gave mail.xxx. com to keep the corporation anonymous- its a private e-mail server-

I apologize again.

How grown up of you... Things don't go the way you want, so you attempt
to degrade those who have tried to help you by calling their efforts "3rd
grade responses".

I have to say, in this case it seems you have gotten out of it precisely
what you put into it.

SMTP requires authentication is checked
Use same settings as receiving mail server is also checked
Receiving always use secure password is checked

Try this:

ˆ Override SMPT port use 2525

Diane:

Thanks for the suggestion. While I did not receive an immediate error message, it appears that the test e-mail is not going through and can not transmit. Any other suggestions? It would be much appreciated.

I would test in a new User in a new Identity. This would eliminate any
problems that could be affecting you.

Going back to what you said:
Client uses Verizon DSL and is tapping into a corp server.
POP account settings mail. xxx.net

Are you sure they even allow POP account from their server. I would have
expected this to be either IMAP or Exchange.

Yes definitely POP. Can not change the ID right now as no one is at the office except us. Created a new account but that do not do the trick. This is very frustrating indeed. Thanks for the help

You're trying to connect to an outside SMTP server from your office?
Most companies block all outbound E-mail traffic for security reasons.
They expect you to use your company's E-mail system instead of personal
E-mail.

Have you consulted with your IT department to determine if they allow
sending mail through servers other than their own?

Yes the IT was engaged and they can not figure this out either. It's a small size firm and my client resides in NY while their e-mail server is on the West Coast. They are able to log into my client's account and send and receive. This seems to be localized to an Entourage /Imac issue but no one is certain. Has us all baffled ....

Jumping in here late, but, WE HAVE THE EXACT SAME ISSUE!! I do know a LOT
about email setup, etc., and what I have concluded is that in certain
situations, Entourage is IGNORING the Outbound SMTP settings and attempting
DIRECT delivery (SMTP-2-SMTP) with MX relays for addresses in the To: list!
The vast majority of emails obey the settings and authenticate SMTP with the
internal email server. but, this user had setup a Distribution list in
Entourage and was trying to send to it and an *Entourate* popup box said
exactly what Anonymous reported. Well, upon closer examination, the pop-up
was an SMTP response message from the MX (Mail eXchange/gateway (NOT MS
Exchange here!!)) relay (from the domain name system (DNS)) of one of the
recipient addresses in the distribution list's email addresses!! AND, the
internal SMTP server logs *NO* connection for SMTP from this particular MAC
for this particular message! Again, if I send an email separate from this
problematic email to the distribution list, it works normally, authenticates
SMTP with the internal server and all is well.

So, what the.... ??!?!??!?

Why would Entourage attempt direct delivery at all with an outbound SMTP
defined?!?!?! If it were handing it off to, say, sendmail running in the
underlying OSX 5.4 unix core, I do not think we would be getting a pop-up
with an SMTP response from an OUTSIDE SMTP server compaining about not
allowing relaying, etc. (which is exactly what I would expect to see IF
Entourage was attempting to directly deliver to the destinations).

This is an Entourage bug of some sort and I am baffled as to how to address
it as there is no other indications that I have found so far as to why this
would even happen.

Weird indeed!

J

Jobsoft Inc

ooops, sorry, forgot to add that this is occurring with Entourage 2004 11.4.0
(no SPs I suspect). our internal server is Zimbra. And, again, outside of
this particular weird email attempting direct deliveries, this SAME Entourage
instance works exactly as expected in conjunction with the Zimbra server.

Also, in case in might matter, in addition to this email being addressed to
a Distribution list, it also has a 2.1mb PDF attachement. So, we have at
least two differing factors here: 1) emailing to a distribution list and/or
2) an accompanying attachment.

Another reason I know this is in Entourage is that Zimbra SMTP MTA (postfix)
even logs incoming SMTP connection initiations, so, even if it failed, you
could see the session attempt logged. There are NO connection attempts for
the problematic email from Entourage! I watched the Zimbra log in real time
while simultaneously doing the Send/Receive and nothing.
