Problem sending messages in one POP account

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

Recently, one of my POP mail accounts became unable to send mail and produces error message- 17897 "Authentication failed because Entourage does not support any of the available authentication methods". To no avail, I have deleted this account, created a "new" accounts, verifying all relevant information, marked SMTP requires authentication, etc. I suspect this may be a corruption in the keychain, but if it were, I should not be able to log on and receive mail from that account. Any suggested cures?

Did you delete the info or did you actually delete the account. Delete the
account.

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption. Run Keychain FirstAid.

Diane,
Still no luck. I had deleted the entire account, but did so again and I continue to have the same problem. Running Keychain FirstAid fixed some problem, but didn't solve this one. Now, when I enter the new mail account, and attempt to enter my password, I am not allowed to save it to the keychain because "Entourage cannot find a keychain to store it". This error message permits me to "reset to defaults", but I am reluctant to do so because I fear it will mess up my other accounts that work fine.

This sounds more involved than just Entourage. I suspect problems in your
User's folder or your system files so let's eliminate your User's folder
first....

Drag your Microsoft User Data folder to Shared. (remember to move back when
finished)

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.

Drag the MUD folder from Shared (it actually copies it so you are safe).

Launch Entourage and you will be required to enter account passwords so be
sure to have those handy as well.

Does it work in the new Identity?

When you installed Leopard, how did you install?

There are 3 types of installs:

1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install

* Just because it's the default doesn't mean it's the best option.

This page describes what each method does:

If you identify that the problems go away in a new User, I would first try
running the latest Apple combo updater. This is so easy to do and certainly
doesn't harm anything I would give it a try. That might fix your problems,
but you might end up having to do an "Archive & Install".

DIANE,
Initially, it did not work with the new identity. After closing and then re-opening Entourage, it treated me like a first-time user. The wizard queried me for the account information, which I provided, and now I can send and receive mail on all accounts. Unfortunately, it still won't let me save my passwords to the logon keychain (says it can't find one), and I had to spend six hours re-entering old mail, contacts, and calendar files from O2M.
Thanks for the help.
