Hi,

For some rreason, I am unable to install updates to my Office 2003
installation. The latest, KB191029 & KB920813 both return the error
0x80070057. Checking in the Event Viewer shows the following:

0000: 57 69 6e 33 32 48 52 65 Win32HRe

My Office installation is totally legitimate so I have ruled out any problem
associated with piracy.....what else could it possibly be?

Cheers and thanks,

Could you please provide a verbose log from the failed install for review?
This will help us get to the bottom of it. Here is how to get a verbose log
that you can error here.

1. Please download the Sp3 to your local machine from here.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B8-0C99-4BE6-8DE7-71D463473A4A&displaylang=en

2. Create a folder in the c:\ named Patch. Place
office2003-KB920813-FullFile-ENU.exe in that folder.

3. goto start, then run. In the run box type "cmd" (without the quotes). hit
enter

4. in the black window that comes up type "cd\" (without the quotes). hit
enter then type "cd patch" (without the quotes). hit enter

5. type "office2003-KB920813-FullFile-ENU.exe /c /t:c:\patch /q" (without
the quotes). hit enter

6. type "msiexec /p RICHED20.msp /l*v c:\patch\Log.txt /qb" (without the
quotes). hit enter

7. It will fail or not. Either way please locate the file c:\patch\Log.txt.
Open that log file. If the patch failed, search the log file for “value 3â€.
Post about 10 lines above and below the “value 3†in this forum. That should
give us the answer why it is failing.

Thanks

Hello Eric,

I have tried all that you suggest (sewveral times) and I'm not even getting
a log.txt file. A window opens with lots of msi information but nothing
else. I also noticed that the KB920813 download is only 1Mb whereas the
other SP3 download, KB923618, is 117Mb; is that correct?

Hello again Eric,

Further to my earlier message, I tinkered around a little with the cmd line
instruction and managed to get a log file; you won't be a happy camper.

The text of the log file was:

This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\1df077.msi
MSI (c) (64:B8) [15:05:40:765]: Product: Microsoft Office Professional
Edition 2003 -- Installation failed.

Wally,

Sounds like you got some patch/office install issues. I'd recommend that you
download the windows installer clean-up utiliity KB290301.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Install it.
Then run it. (You will find it in the program list)
Find Office 2003 on the list and choose remove.
Reboot.
After the reboot. Find and delete (if present) the following reg keys and
folders.

HKLM\software\microsoft\office
HKLM\software\microsoft\officecustomizewizard
HKCU\software\microsoft\office
HKCU\software\microsoft\officecustomizewizard
c:\msocache (Hidden)
c:\program files\microsoft office
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\office11

Then reinstall office.

Eric

Eric,

Thank you for taking the time to help me, I appreciate it very much.

I shall do all that you suggest, reluctantly. I can't afford to have an
insecure Office environment on this particular computer.

Thanks again mate,
