Error messages

Hi,

I'm running 10.4.9 and having problems with entourage. It's been
taking forever to connect to MSN.com to get/send my mail. I've been
getting a ton of TWO error messages. They are "4363" and "-18489".

I used one of my precious "e-mail help" episodes to try to fix this.
Paul said that my database was corrupted. He told me to close all
programs, hit the "option" button, then click the entourage icon on
the dock. This brings up a window that allows you to "rebuild" you
database. I was to do this...I did.

Now my e-mail files are half loaded, haf missing, and entourage gets
caught in a seemingly endless loop when trying to access msn.com.
Heck I had to go to hotmail to reply to the e-mail to set up my
account here.

I'm pretty frustrated. This should be easier.

What version of Entourage?

Error 4363

4363 "Unknown Error"

If you get error 4363 on a transmission attempt, and you have one or more
attachments, try deleting and re-attaching the file or files.

Error -18489 is not listed on the Error Page:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/page.html>, but errors close in number
often have similar solutions or situations. Can you

An unknown error (-18493) occurred.

An unknown error (-18493) has occurred. Your mailbox has exceeded the size
limit. Account name: "Username"

Since both of these are dealing with transmission, I would guess that it¹s a
problem with your account or messages with attachments. However, error
messages aren¹t exact and you need to give us as much detail as possible so
we can help with the problem.

The first thing you need to do is determine where the problem is located so
you can take the appropriate steps to correct the problem. The easiest way
is to test default setting to see if you can reproduce the problems.

1. Switch to a new Identity in Entourage (under File in the menu bar)
2. Enter your MSN account info.
3. Be sure to check under Options: Leave Mail on server. (this will allow
you to download in the test Identity and still have the mail available for
you main account)
4. Test downloading

Were the conditions the same? If no, then it is your database that is the
problem. If yes, then it¹s not Entourage. Next would be to test your User¹s
folder.

1. Create a new User in System Preferences
2. Open Entourage-you¹ll need to repeat steps 2-4 above

If you don¹t experience any problems, then it is a problem in your User¹s
folder.

If yes, then it¹s a server problem with your ISP.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your help. It is entourage 11.3.3, part of Office 2004.

I'll be trying out your ideas later. Just so I'm clear, when you say
switch to a new identity under the entourage file menu, is it the "new
e-mail address" we're talking about? If not could you please describe
where exactly in the "file" menu I would create this new "identity"?

So I'm going to try a fresh new "identity" from my current user
location. If that has the same problems I'm going to go to a
different user (in my mac OS) and try the same things. Both of these
will be fresh with few (if any) database messages to cause problems.
This way we can determine WHERE the problem is, specifically whether
or not the problem is based in my database...Right?

Thanks again,

Dave

Sorry that should be under Entourage in the menu bar not File. Don¹t know
where my head was when I wrote that.

Entourage --> Switch Identity --> Select New

Correct. This way you test in a clean environment to eliminate probably
causes.

Sometimes it¹s not the database but other files in your User¹s folder.
That¹s why after we eliminate the database as a cause we test in a new User.
This has clean preferences and no additional applications to clutter the
test.

Hi Diane,

Well, while I was waiting to do the things you described, I started
"cleaning" out my old e-mails. There was a lot, including a lot of
messages that we had sent people with large JPEGs attached. By the
time they replied (with the JPEGs still attached) I suppose there was
a large accumulation of data that was clogging the system or contained
some other "problem".

Anyway, it seems to be working fine now. I appreciate your help. If
the problem resurfaces I'll use your suggestions. Each time you learn
a new process of troubleshooting it adds to one's ability to help
themselves solve problems in the future.

Thanks again,

Dave

I suggest removing incoming attachments with one of the "remove attachment"
scripts. They will save, remove and link the saved files to the message, so
you can open the file directly from the message.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/script/fav_scripts.html#favscript17>

<http://scriptbuilders.net/files/saveattachments20041.0.0.html>

Also remove your outgoing attachments with a rule. This is assuming your
outgoing attachments are stored elsewhere on your computer. No need to have
them duplicated and filling up your database.

Anyway, it seems to be working fine now. I appreciate your help. If
the problem resurfaces I'll use your suggestions. Each time you learn
a new process of troubleshooting it adds to one's ability to help
themselves solve problems in the future.

The troubleshooting basics applies to all software. Once you know how you
can get back to work without the long time delays of having to ask for help.
For me, when something goes wrong I want answer now not in a few days.
