excel, mail merge numbering in publisher

Maybe I should of asked this in excel,
but I posted my previous question here about numbering tickets.
consecutively, I have tried one side and seems to work (thanks Mary)
Now to try the other side, but before that.
I would like the numbers go 001 then 002 then so on.
Everytime I try to put the zero's they disappear?
I tried formatting the numbers but maybe I am missing something?
thanks Bruce

ps, why don't I get notification when someone puts and answer?
I do click the notify me or replies button? thanks

Once you have your numbers in place in Excel, format the field as text.

You should be using a real newsreader.

Bruce, I typed up these notes for a friend recently, then came across your
post. I always tend to go into a lot of overkill information when helping
out friends who aren't very computer literate, so forgive the excessive
steps. It might be useful to others, though Mary seems to have covered
everything. She has helped me in the past :)

By coincidence, I successfully did a similar thing with numbering Tickets in
Publisher 2003.
(1) Designed my Ticket in Publisher 2003, then inserted two empty text
boxes, and positioned.

(2) Made a database in Excel 2003 as follows:
New spreadsheet. Click on Column A Title to select the whole column, then
Format->Cells->Text.
(Note. Column A must be formatted as Text to have the leading zeros call
through to Publisher).

In cell A1, type header as: No.
In cell A2, type 001
In cell A3, type 002
In cell A4, type 003.

Highlight cells A2 through to A4. Position cursor on bottom right corner of
cell A4 for crosshair, drag it down to fill the cells stopping at 250 (cell
A251).
Save this as an ordinary Excel file, name it something like Tickets to 250.
This will be your database for your ticket numbers in Publisher. You can use
the same field twice to get two sets of numbers on your tickets. Shut Excel
down.

(3) Back in Publisher 2003 with my Ticket document open, Tools->Mail and
Catalog Merge->Mail and Catalog Merge Wizard. Down the lefthand side of your
Publisher window, you’ll get the Mail and Catalog Merge Task Pane.

Under Select a merge type: check “Mail Mergeâ€.

Go through the Wizard Steps at the bottom as follows:

Step 1 of 5: Next: Select Data Source.
Check “Use an existing listâ€
Click on Browse…
In Select Data Source window, choose "Tickets to 250.xls". Click OK.
In the resulting Select Table window, highlight Sheet1# and tick "First row
of data contains column headers". Click OK.
In the resulting Mail Merge Recipients window, just click OK.
Now look at the Mail and Catalog Merge Task Pane under “Use an existing
list†and it is saying “Currently, your recipients are selected from:
[Sheet1$] in Tickets to 250.xls.â€

Step 2 of 5: Next: Create your publication. Click and the Task Pane changes,
now you should see a list of fields in your database, in this case though,
only one, being [T] No#.

Position your cursor in one of the blank text boxes on your Ticket, then
click on the [T] No#. field on the Task Pane to insert the field code into
your text box. Result <<No#>> appears in the text box.
Do the same with the second blank text box you made.

To view the contents, click on Step 3 of 5: Next: Preview your publication.
The Task Pane changes, and you’ll get << and >> options near the top to
scroll through your data.

Step 4 of 5: Complete the merge.

Warning Tip! It is a known Publisher glitch that it does not show all the
consecutive numbers in Print Preview. However it does print all the tickets,
numbered correctly. Do a trial run first to test this.
