External Hard Drive problem

G

Gail Gurman

I am using Win2K and I recently installed an external hard drive. In
general, it works fine and doesn't spontaneously disconnect. However,
whenever I start OneNote, the hard drive appears to disconnect. That is, I
get a message from Windows saying that an attached device has been
disconnected the wrong way. When I look in My Computer, the hard drive is
gone. When I exit OneNote, the hard drive returns.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks.

Check your event log to see if any error messages are being recorded.
I'm assuming this is a USB external drive correct?

I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't check the event log, but I'll
do it later when I'm at home.

It is a USB external drive.

Also, I discovered another detail. I keep my class notes on my notebook
computer which, when I'm at home, is connected to my PC over a wireless
network. "My Notebook" on my notebook computer is mapped to the N: drive
on my PC. When I am at home, I use OneNote on my PC and access my class
notes through the N: drive. The disk drive disconnect problem only
happens when my notebook computer is online (and thus, OneNote accesses
the N: drive). If it is not connected, there is no problem.

I got a message from LaCie suggesting that I remap the hard drive to
another letter, so I did; I mapped it to L:. (Remember that I have "My
Notebook" on the notebook computer mapped to N:.) Now when I start OneNote,
it maps F: to "My Notebook" on my notebook, and then it maps G: the same
way, but when then when I try to access any of them, it shows the folders,
but it says "OneNote could not open the location you specified. Make sure
you have permission to open or save files in this location."

I can access my files just fine through Windows Explorer, and if I double-
click on them, they open (individually) in OneNote. Also, if I create a
section in OneNote while in a network folder, the file is created. So,
OneNote is accessing the folders, but not the files.

Just wanted to make a slight clarification: When I try to open files on
the notebook computer via the network in OneNote, it appears to see the
file names because it creates folder and section titles, but it doesn't
seem to be able to access the /contents/ of the files.

Okay, I just tried opening OneNote again and it disconnected the
harddrive again, even though it was mapped to L:
