"Format: Outline" in the Find Dialog Window

Often when I open the Find dialog window, under "Find What:" it says "Format:
Outline".

I don't know what makes this format appear. I never use the Outline effect
for fonts, and I never search for any text with the Outline effect.

When I see that Word is going to search only for outline characters, I have
to click the No Formatting button to fix the problem.

When I fail to see that Word is going to limit the search to only outline
characters, then my search returns misleading results. It doesn't find
anything.

Someone else in my office had the same problem today on a different computer.

What is the explanation of this problem? Are there ways I can fix it? Is
Microsoft aware of this problem?

Do you run one or more macros from time to time or du you have any Word
add-ins installed?

The outline formatting setting could be a result of running a macro that use
the Find function to perform operations and that does it in a way that leaves
formatting settings in the dialog box. The fact that someone else in your
office experienced the same indicates that you could have a common macro or
add-in could be the culprit.

I write and run macros occasionally, but my coworker doesn't. I thought the
problem might be caused by macros until my coworker had the same problem.

In any case, none of my macros changes text to outline or searches for text
that is characters formatted as outlines.

Both my coworker and I have the Add-In for Adobe Acrobat 9, and it's the
only Add-In we have.

Thanks for your response. I'm glad to help from a Word MVP!

I've seen odd formats in the Find dialog that I attribute to the use of the
Adobe Acrobat add-in.

Yes, that's it. I used the Adobe PDFMaker Office COM Addin, the "Create PDF"
button, and afterward the Find and Replace dialog had Outline as the Format
for Find What.

Thank you for solving the mystery. I guess I should report my problem to
Adobe.

I think I would be a good idea to report the problem to Adobe.

I have an older version of Adobe Acrobat and it does not cause that specific
problem. Maybe I should appreciate my old version ;-)

In my case, I think it's Underline, rather than Outline, but it's the same
principle.
