FrontPage won't open html files

T

Tim Cole

When I try to open html files in any websites created or maintained with
this same version of FrontPage (2003) I get this error message:

"There was an error when trying to run FrontPage (Open as HTML). The
command: failed."

All my sites were fully editable and accessible and were created as FP
websites, but they now give me this error when I try to edit any html pages.
I fully
reinstalled FP2003, but I am still unable to open any pages. These were all
working just days ago.
Any ideas?

Hi Tim,

Try going to Steve's site and downloading and running FrontPage Cleaner.
Make sure FrontPage is closed when you run it:

http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

Also even if you re-installed..if the above doesn't do the trick..then try
doing a repair of FrontPage..you can access that from the help files..and
will probably need the cd during the process.

No, Steve did not do anything for me. And neither did the repair/reinstall.
None of my previously compiled websites can be edited. A month ago all of
them could be. I even copied the files back from an Internet server using
WS/FTP and put them into a new folder. I tried importing them using
FP2003 -- no change.
I installed FP2003 on my laptop and had no problem with any of the sites'
html files -- I could edit them to my heart's content. So, the site files
are not corrupt. FP2003 has no problems on the install disk. There were no
problems indicated during the install or the reinstall.
My environment on the PC where the problem exists: AMD 1800; WinXP, Office
2003 (also just reinstalled and may not have all the patches and service
packs yet), 1 gb ram, 10 gb free on the hd.
On my laptop: Intel 400; WinXP; Office 2000; 256mb ram; 1 gb free on the
hd.
I am really getting desperate, here!

Are you getting an error message? Try going to Windows Explorer and
choosing Tools, Folder Options, File Types. Look for the .htm and .html
file types and see if the program to open them is FrontPage. If not, click
Change, then select from list. Choose FrontPage.

In FP Tools Options Configure Editors
make sure you have FP set to open htm/html files as Open as HTML as the default
