Hotmail to outlook 2003 - sudden errors

I have a very old hotmail account, and have been downloading my account to
Outlook for some time now. A couple of days ago it stopped downloading with
the following error report:

Task 'Hotmail: Folder:Inbox Synchronizing headers.' reported error
(0xC00CE508) : 'The server responded 'An invalid character was found in text
content.
'. '

Has anyone got suggestions how to fix this?
is it a problem with Hotmail or Outlook?

i have already tried uninstalling hotmail and re-loading and the only thing
i did was wiped all my existing emails out of the inbox... Arrrrgh

Any help will be gratefully recieved.
