How do I make a shadow behind an object have 'soft, fuzzy' edges?

I got the shadow in okay, but I'm wondering if there is a way to make the
edges soft or fuzzy. I received a printed newsletter that has that effect
behind pictures; however, I don't know if it was done in Publisher. I'm just
wondering if there is a way to do it in Publisher?
