How do I make shadows with diffuse edges?

Shadows, even semi-transparent shadows, have a hard edge. They would look a
lot more like they float if the edges were diffuse, if the shadow got lighter
the further from the photo edge it got.

This is the best Publisher can do. You could create a separate object and fill
it with a gradient. Position it behind the photo.
