How to determine which Publisher version was used to create a PUB

Our new secretary accidentally removed MS Publisher from her computer. In
looking for the original CD, all I could find was one for Publisher 98. I'm
sure we have a later version, but no one knows exactly which version. Is it
possible to tell from a .pub document which version it was created with?

Thank you!

It may not work for you but you can open the file in Notepad (make sure word
wrap is turned on). I have just tested some of my old files and a few I
just created in different versions of Publisher. Here is what I found.

Publisher version 2.0 will show somewhere in it the words Publisher 2.0.
Publisher 98, 2000 & 2003 will all show Publisher 3.0 (that is the file type
apparently.)

Look through the document in Notepad for the following two items. The first
is the words "Publisher 3.0" and the second is for the default printer which
may have the letters for the printer spaced out like "H P L a s
e r j e t......" or may be together like "HP Laserjet..." In each
of the documents I opened this is what I found:

98 embeds the name of the default printer early in the document but
Publisher 3.0 is very near the end of the document.
2000 embeds the name of the default printer before where it says Publisher
3.0
2003 embeds the default printer much later after the Publisher 3.0 line,
very near the end of the document.

I don't have a working copy of Publisher 97 or XP to try at this time and
these are guesstimates (WAGs) of what you may find. Hope it helps but I
really can't guarantee anything.
