How to open Microsoft Office 2004 on Mac with Microsoft Office 2004 and
not with Microsoft Office 2008 on Mac?

If both Microsoft Office 2004 and Microsoft Office 2008 are installed
on the Mac, the latter opens all Microsoft Office 2004 files (.doc,
..ppt and .xls) by default. I know that it was intended as a feature,
but it is a real pain, nightmare and tremendous waste of time if you
have both Microsoft Office 2004 and Microsoft Office 2008 installed on
the same Mac. And must have both.

Amazingly, if the File - Get Info - Open with is changed to the
corresponding Office 2004 application (Word, Excel or PowerPoint), it
works as expected and fixes the problem for such single file, but if
the "Change All" button is clicked, then such file and the rest are
open with Microsoft Office 2008 applications. What??!!

I mean, if the "Change All" button is NOT clicked, then the Open with
works as expected, so, it must do something to the file (yet, Console
says nothing!).

Anyone can figure it out and make a macro or application or whatever to
change all such Office 2004 files with a single click for all (I have
thousands of such Office 2004 files and I cannot afford to change them
on a one-by-one basis; I would need months or years!), so that they are
always open with Office 2004 applications (Word, Excel or PowerPoint)
and not Office 2008 applications.

Thanks.

By way of a dbl-clk in Finder you can't. It's an OS X issue as much as
anything else. As a workaround you can launch the 2004 app first - if it is
running it will be used for the binary files yo dbl-clk. You can also rt-clk
a file & select the preferred app from the Open With command.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know, but what I am looking for is a way
of doing it without opening first the application or Control click and
select the application. Just double click the Office 2004 file without
any other application open, and office 2004 application (Word, Excel or
PowerPoint) should open it.

As said, that can be accomplished via the Get Info menu, and works for
ever for such file, as wanted. But the problem is that it must be done
for each single Office 2004 file on a one-by-one basis, yet I cannot
afford it, since I have thousands of such files.

So, the rationale is that if there is an efficient way to do it for a
particular file (via the Get Info menu), it should be possible to do it
for all Office 2004 files with a macro or something. That is what I am
looking for.

Thanks again.

Thanks. I know, but I am looking for a fix-all, so that double clicking
any Office 2004 file opens it with the corresponding Office 2004
application (Word, Excel or PowerPoint).

It should be possible with some macro or application or something else
since it is indeed possible with single files using the Get Info menu,
which means that the appropriate changes are made for such file for
ever, so that it is open with the corresponding Office 2004 file
always, for ever. Since it is possible for a single file, there should
be way of doing it for all, with a single click.

Thanks again.

This is not a valid assumption :)

which means that the appropriate changes are made for such file for
ever,

That does not happen.

The quick answer is it just does not work that way! Just open the
application first, and then use file open.

In my case it is true. If I change via Get Info to open a particular
Office 2004 file (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) with Office 2004, it
always opens after double clicking it with such Office 2004
application, even if no application is previously open.

Actually, right when I make such selection via Get Info, the
fseventer.app indicates that the Office 2004 file has been changed (but
does not inndicate how and Console says nothing as previously said).
So, indeed, the file is changed.

So, if anyone could determine which change is made using the Get Info,
it should be possible to create a method to change them all wich works.
