Initializing root folders

I am having the same problem--let me say it this way:
When I am writing an email and need to attach an image or something, I click
on attach and it brings up a box that say (with the moving blocks)
"initializing the root folders to display".
This take up to 30 seconds to finish.
Is there any way to speed this up or not have it do whatever it is doing to
speed things up?

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure that is the problem but it does not tell me
which drive it cannot connect too. Anyway to find out which one it cannot
access?

This means outlook can't connect to one of your mapped network drives,
either because its not available or you need to enter your username and
password to access it.

This problem applies to ALL Office 2007 programs. Mine goes for ever and ever.

The short cut I use, that I often forget to my dissappontment, is to unplug
the netword cable from the computer BEFORE looking for files. Somebody
obviously wrote a grand search routine that effectively stops the computer
until its task is finished. The Cancel button is disfunctional. I don't think
any quick fix is possible because this appears to be a routine that sends
signals down the network paths that includes the Internet and awaits replies
that never come back.

Solution: Bite the bullet and take it like a man.

It's not just on Outlook 2007, it applies to all versions of Office because
the routine used is from Windows Explorer. It's especially bad if you last
attached something from a network share and that share isn't available at
that time. Then the discovery process takes forever.

I've begun dealing with this problem in the last few days and for it being
such an old problem I am annoyed it has not been addressed yet.

Is there anything that can be done to either address the way Windows
Explorer performs drive discovery or prevent Office applications from taking
part in Windows Explorer drive discovery functions? The manual disconnect
and batch file ideas are OK but too hard to implement to make the transition
more seamless between on and off the network for the users. Any assistance
would be appreciated. Thanks.
