Is there a default width for containers?

When I start typing text in a new container, it always goes about half way
across my page and then wraps to the next line, even though there's a lot of
room left on the right side of the page. Every time I type new text into a
new container, I have to drag the right edge of the container to make it
stretch across the whole page.

Is there a way to set a default width for new containers? Or, how can I
remedy this?

There is no way to set the width for containers.
Containers normally grow dynamically as one types.
It's different, however if one has drawn a container to a certain width
with the mouse. The width will not be dynamically adjusted thereafter.

What sounds strange is that you seem to get a someway fixed width when
starting to type a text.
