Linked Graph - Source File Problem

I have an 18-slide Powerpoint. Most of the slides contain at least two linked
graphs. The source file is in Excel. I can open the source file, and I can
open the presentation. But, when I click to update links in the presentation,
I get the ".... You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the
documents are in different folders...." message in the Excel source file. Can
anyone help?

Why is Powerpoint trying to open the Excel file? It's already open. I have a
different version of the same Powerpoint that opens and updates correctly
(when I open the Excel file, the presentation, and update links).
