modifying a Word template

I'd like to use the template in Word Mail Merge for making a membership
directory. None of the templates are exactly right, but I can't figure out
how to modify a template to fit my needs. All the instructions say, "First,
modify your template." Then they never tell HOW to do that. I'm using Word
2003.

You change the elements currently in the document by changing attributes of
elements, adding or deleting elements....
