Mplay32.exe Codec

Jeffrey Falk

If I attempt to open an AVI file with mplay32.exe, I get the following
message. Video not available cannot find "vids:dvsd" decompressor. Where can
I get that file and if I install it Will I be bale to play avi files using
PPT 2003. I realize it works with MS media Player, but many of my PPS are
distributed to people who may not have the later media players.
Thank you

I'm guessing that your AVI came from a digital camera. Try renaming the file,
giving it a file extension of .MPG. Then insert it in your presentation. Let
us know if that does the trick.

Thank you.
I am already familiar with that particular reference and the later versions

E

Echo S

Yes, but try renaming them with an MPG extension anyway. It's the one time
you may be able to re-extension a file and have it actually work.

J

Jeffrey Falk

I renamed it but it only plays audio and gives the same black screen that
the avi does.
I attempted to have the avi play though the MS Player but I get a Visual
Basic error which does not allow me to load it.
Ever since I installed Office SP-1-strange things have been happening with
Visual Basic and Office Suite Programs including PPT 2003.
As always, I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thank you

Nuts, that often works with the digital camera files.

Rename it back to AVI, and then see if your camera software allows you to
export the file with a more common codec. See
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm for
information about how PPT handles multimedia and common codecs.

True.....but only when powerpoint is saying it's the "motion jpeg" codec.....I thought the same until I re-read the
original post

Not "vids:dvsd" decompressor.
But "vids:mjpeg" decompressor.

So I guess it's a case of finding out what a DVSD file is

Nice catch, TAJ.

Which Codec Does this Video Clip Use?

This comes from http://tinyurl.com/4s5nx -- where our usual advice seems to
be to try to save/render the file using a different codec.

These avi video files were produced from 2 sources. A Canon Optura 300 video
camera and a datavideo DAC-100 digital video converter. Video editing
software was either Adobe Premiere Pro or Ulead. Mplay32.exe always gives me
the same Video Not Available, Cannot find 'vids:dvsd' decompressor. If I try
to open it in powerpoint, I just get audio and the black rectangular screen.
I have not been successful with having MS Media player open it while in PPT.
as an inserted object. I'll keep playing

Both Premiere and Ulead offer various rendering options. You should be able
to find something more common to use that mplay32.exe will be happy with.

Very true, but when I need a fast video file, nothing beats a direct
download from the camera of the avi file. I guess I'm spoiled but sometimes
the rendering takes too long. I guess I'll have to live with it until a new
upgrade.
I really appreciate all the suggestions, that is what makes this News Group
such a truly wonderful resource.
Thanks again

When you mentioned Premiere Pro, I thought it worth piping in. A recent
project comprised of Premiere 6 and Pro files sved to AVI format. The files
were created using the WMV formatting codec but saved to AVI - default in
both 6 and Pro. When they were played, the 6 version of AVI's played fine.
When the Pro version played, your response was witnessed - on several
machines. A very good Microsoft tech walked me through the options -
thinkong PPT was at fault. It wasn't. It appears the saving of AVI format
in Pro is not complete! I used Windows Movie Maker to conver the Pro files
into a WMV format and that cleared the problem. try it.

OshkoshSteve,

Thanks for this extra bit of information.

Do you happen to know

(a) who the ms tech was
and
(b) what the settings were for the WMV video (e.g. codec/bit rate/etc)

Cheers
