Need Help with Word Crashing

R

Hello--

I am the IT guy at our company and the client with this problem is also me.
I will paste the two event logs below my message that I get. Neither have any
additional information when I click on the supplied links.

The symptoms are that when I open Word, it takes a very long time. I then
get the pop up of "MS Office Word Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close..."

When I finally get Word to open, it takes an extremely long time to close,
and many times, I will get the same above crash message.

I've done a Detect and Repair. Then I did a Detect and Repair with the
original installation CD. I then completely uninstalled MS Office, rebooted,
and reinstalled it.

After that did not work, I completely reformatted my hard drive and rebuilt
my system. When I restored my backup, it brought the problem back too.

System is running on Windows XP Pro with SP2. Plenty of RAM, fast HT P4
processor, lots of HD space, etc.

Office is 2003 Standard from a volume license our company owns.

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Stephen

Ah, get this. I don't have a normal.dot template. I was following the article
you gave me, and it sid to make sure I only have one, etc. I searched my
entire hard drive and there are none.

What can/should I do?

You almost certainly do have a normal.dot template. It is considered a
hidden system file and can be hard to find.
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm gives directions on
finding normal.dot.

If you do not have a normal.dot, then it is not the source of your problems.
Look into the other possibilities.

Charles--

I unhid my folders in the view and searched my entire hard drive. There is
no file named normal.dot. I then did a wildcard search for all .dot files,
and they were displayed, but there was no normal.dot file.

What should I do?

PS. I also did a search for just "normal" with no file extension and nothing
came up.
