Office 2000 error: This package could not be opened.

In the attempt to repair Microsoft Office 2000 Premium due to Icons missing
within Windows XP Professional. I am recieving the following Error... "This
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that
you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows Installer Package."

I have attempted to uninstall office and I recieve the same error message.
This is a retail version. I have scanned the forum and have done several of
the suggestions such as running Setup.exe/fv Data1.msi and also running the
msicuu2.exe file from the Microsoft Website. None of which is working.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Looks like its a problem with missing patch information.
Always take a backup of reg keys before deleting.

1) you might want to try deleting the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\{product guid for
office 2000}\Patches
Try repair again.

2) msiexec /fvm \\path to data1.msi

3) If it still fails, try msiexec /fecums \\"path to data1.msi" /L*V
c:\recache.txt

4) If its not working again, please send me the recache.txt file from C:\
drive.
