Office 2003 components reinstall ends with Event ID 5000 after using Installer Cleanup Utility

Hi,

The below problem started when I tried to install Office 2003 Service
Pack 1 last week.

Environment:
* Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1, patched up to date
* Office 2003 Professional, all components except Access, incl.
FrontPage 2003, Visio 2003, Project 2003; patched up to date
* Office 2000 Professional, Access only, Service Release 1; patched up
to date
* I have full admin rights on the machine
* There is sufficient space on the C: drive

Tried to install Office 2003 Service Pack 1, which resulted in "This
update cannot be applied".
* the original installation source of all components was available on
its original installation (a network share)
* tried again with antivirus disabled, same result

After reading some posts to this group - but not reading them very
well - used Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove installation
information for FrontPage 2003, Visio 2003, Project 2003 and Access
2000.

Attempted reinstall of FrontPage 2003: setup reports lack of space on
D:, which is the DVD-ROM drive (the drive letter was never used for
anything else).
This is a typical install to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\.

Changed drive letter of the DVD-ROM drive to F: and mapped drive
letter D: to a network share with full access (so if setup attempts
any caching, it will be able to).

Now setup gets further, but ends with error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Office 11
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5000

P10 NIL.

It seems to be related to caching of files, so tried to run setup
again with parameters CDCACHE=0, LOCALCACHEDRIVE=D and
LOCALCACHEDRIVE=C. Was watching the D: drive, but as far as setup got
no caching was done on that drive.

The setup log shows the following errors that might be relevant:
* ReserveCacheCost: Error 0x80070002: failed to get resource store
handle for cabinet: SKU017.CAB
Action ended 10:00:26: ReserveCacheCost. Return value 1.

* MSI (c) (68:A0): MainEngineThread is returning 1603

Visio 2003 results in a similar error:

www.eventid.net does not have any relevant information on Event ID
5000, neither do MS support pages.

It seems that ICU messed up some default settings related to caching
(?).

Any ideas on how this could be fixed other than by a complete
reinstall of the OS and all apps?

Henk, I expect that you're correct about the Local Install Source being the
source of your problem since those settings still existed in the Windows
registry after using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I recommend
using the Local Installation Source Tool to remove the data and the registry
information. You'll find that tool at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/journ/LISTool.htm.

Hi Sloan,

I tried what you suggested.

1. Run LISTOOL.EXE
2. Select radio button Delete and disable LIS
3. Click Next
4. Check checkbox to accept license agreement and click Next
5. A dialog appears titled Microsoft Office 2003 Local Installation
Source Tool, Delete and disable the Local Installation Source. In the
list of Office programs, 4 checkboxes appear that are not followed by
any text and 1 checkbox appears that is followed by text Microsoft
Error Reporting (the number 4 corresponds to the 3 Office 2003 apps
and 1 Office 2000 app that were removed using ICU). Select the 4
checkboxes that are not followed by any text and click Next.
6. Click Delete

The progress indicator goes to about 10% and stops there. I left the
tool running for a while, processes LISTOOL.EXE and OSE.EXE were
running.

It seems that something is more seriously messed up which prevents
Listool from completing successfully (the fact that the 4 checkboxes
appear without additional text might be an indication of this).

Would you know a way to perform this process manually (i.e. which
folders should be deleted and which Registry keys should be
deleted/altered)?

Regards,

Henk
