Office 2008 apps slow to close (Part 2)

K.B.

This is a followup to my previous topic: Office apps taking a long time to
close after 12.2.3.

So far here is the situation. Running 10.6.2 and Office 12.2.3.

I've come to the conclusion that it is NOT the 12.2.3 update causing the
slow app close problem.

Here's the problem again. Open a single Office app. Close it. The app
windows will close right away, but the app is still running (dot under the
icon or icon in dock), and the CPU will spike for up to 10 seconds. Then
the app finally closes.

The interesting part is that it only does it for the FIRST Office app
opened. So if you open Word then Excel, you can close Excel instantly.
However, Word is slow to close. It's basically tied to the first open
Office app.

The reason I know it's not tied to the 12.2.3 update is I just tried this on
my Mom's MacBook which is running 10.6.2 and Office 12.2.1. Same thing
happens.

This issue itself seems to be tied to whether the Office app in question is
in the OS X firewall with either a Deny or Allow incoming connections. If
the app is set to Deny incoming connections, the slow close occurs. If the
app is set to Allow incoming connections (or I'm guessing the Firewall is
off) then the app closes instantly.

Because on my main machine I ALWAYS have Entourage open (thus being the
first app), I never noticed this before. So I'm not sure exactly WHEN this
started happening? Was it 10.6.2? or 10.6?

Anyone have a 10.6 or 10.6.1 machine to test? Anyone with 10.6.2 care to
test to see if they can reproduce the issue?
